Q. Why did you change the name of the organization (from Boston E-Learning to New England Learning?)
A. Within two years of being founded, we realized that our association had outgrown its original name and mission. NELA, in fact, better reflects the needs and interests of our professional community. For instance,
The term "e-learning" is too narrow a description of how the community is deploying a variety of technologies such as on-line training, knowledge management, collaboration software, and other solutions to enhance learning.
Best learning practices are actually blended solutions comprised of traditional methods and innovative technology.
Our professional community extends beyond the Boston area and includes participants throughout New England and beyond.
Q. Is the organization still focused on e-learning?
A. Yes. NELA's mission is to bring together professionals in industry and education for the purpose of advancing the successful adoption of technology for learning. There are many different forms of learning technology, such as synchronous and asynchronous e-learning, learning management systems (LMS), learning content management systems (LCMS), multimedia, web conferencing and others. NELA is open to users and vendors of all types of learning technology.
Q. What about traditional training approaches?
A. Our position is that technology enhances the overall learning process and does not totally replace traditional learning approaches like instructor-led classes, mentoring and reading. For many organizations, the most effective learning is a blended approach. Therefore, NELA welcomes users and vendors of traditional approaches.
Q. Who can become a member?
A. At this time, only organizations can become members. See the Join Us - NELA Membership section for more details. There is no individual-level membership available. However, individuals can be active as volunteers - See Join Us - Volunteers.

Q. What other organizations does NELA partner with?
